What You Need to Know about Your Pet's Vet Surgery
Before your pet's surgery, you will meet with one of our veterinarians and receive instructions specific to your pet's surgical experience. It is important that you understand these instructions and follow them as directed. For example, ALL our surgical patients are required to have food withheld from midnight on the day of their surgery. These rules are designed to protect your pet during their surgical procedure.
Additionally, we do require that all pets undergoing scheduled surgical procedures be fully up to date on their vaccinations.
Finally, for some pets, we require pre-surgical blood work to be performed. This blood work is done to assess your pet's overall health and to ensure that your pet is healthy enough to undergo surgery at that time.
Pain management is an important factor in your pet's surgical recovery. Pain can not only make your pet feel awful following their surgical procedure, but it can also slow the healing process. We firmly believe in a protocol of aggressive pain management for all our surgical patients. This protocol includes pre-operative pain control, local anesthesia as needed, and post-operative pain control. Fentanyl patches are applied one day before most extensive soft tissue surgical cases, as dictated by a specialist.
All of our on-site veterinarians work as a team in the diagnosis and treatment of cases involving internal medicine. We take this approach to give your pet second (and third) opinions from all veterinarians and specialists within our practice to ascertain the right treatment approach for each individual case.
